my 2 cents: the final push
we have 7 business days, at best, left in the year and if you’re actively looking or hiring, you’re probably feeling like the year’s up and might as well push to january for next steps. while that may feel true, and for some folks, be true… it doesn’t have to be.
there’s this legendary story of how zuck bought instagram when there was a bidding war by flying out over the weekend to close the deal. he wasn’t interested in following SOPs or playing by the proverbial rules. he wanted to get it done and knew he had to just send it to get it done.
now i’m not suggesting you bombard candidates to take an interview or that you fly out to a hiring manager’s house on christmas eve to “close the deal” lol. that’ll never work.
i know i hit on this subject last week, but since then i’ve scheduled 11 interviews, extended an offer (and closed it), and brought on a new client that’s already interviewing 5 folks all before the new year.
if you’re working at all the rest of the year, and hiring is a top priority, you can absolutely move the needle.
have a dream candidate in mind?
“hey silly goose, was wondering if you have 15 min to catch up over the winter break on your plans for next year” don’t try and force a specific process, just get them to take some bait
have a dream hiring manager you want to work for?
draft up a 30/60/90 or account map for them and email them. “hey big dog, your open role is my dream job and i’ve taken some time over the holiday break to put together a quick account map or _____ for you. do you have a few minutes this week (if you’re working) to go over it?
do something to stand out. do anything to be intentional.
EVERYONE IS DOING NOTHING THIS WEEK which means just about any effort is going to stand out. if you’re playing by the standard rules and norms of typical or average hiring/interviewing practices, you’re going to get average results.
and right now, average isn’t cutting it.
tl;dr:
true effort will win the game.
some effort will keep you in the game.
no effort will take you out of the game.
